Indian Food in Bath – Top 5 Places to Go

There are a wealth of restaurants in Bath, so many that sometimes it can be difficult to know where to go or what to choose. Our Brasserie Brunel, for example, is a Parisian style restaurant with a delicious choice of French and British inspired dishes; but for those of you wishing to try food from somewhere a little further away, then Indian food is extremely popular in the city.

Whether you’re after a traditional neighbourhood curry house or a fine dining experience you won’t go hungry in our city. We’ve come up with our Guide to the Top 5 places to go for Indian food in Bath. There are many other restaurants to try, but here are a few to start you off.

  1. CHAI WALLA – Kingsmead Square

This is not a restaurant but a pop up street food take-away that nestles in the heart of the city. Open for just over a year it’s popularity can be measured by the vast queues that snake from out its door at lunch time. The brainchild of Niraj Gadher, he brings his mother and grandmother’s Indian cooking direct to the streets of Bath, and the food is so authentic you have to remind yourself that yes you really are in England. All the food is vegetarian and cooked fresh on the premises – from samosas and falafals to bhajis and wraps. Not open in the evenings this is the perfect place to head to and grab a snack on the go or a selection of goodies for a picnic in one of the nearby parks.

2. INDIAN TEMPTATION – High Street

Hidden in plain sight of Bath Abbey, ascend the stairs to reach this popular Indian restaurant. The food here is exclusively Vegetarian as most traditional Indian cooking is, but don’t let it put you off as it’s so tasty that you won’t notice there is no meat. The chef here conjures up delicious dishes from both Northern and Southern India, and there is a special lunch time offer to try. Open 12-3pm for Lunch and then 6-10.30pm for dinner.

3. THE EASTERN EYE – Quiet Street

This restaurant really does welcome a clash of East meets West, with a dose of history thrown in. Situated inside a beautiful Georgian building that has a beautiful domed ceiling, this building was once used for meetings, exhibitions and even later on as a Methodist Chapel. The food here is traditional Indian Cuisine and proves popular with the locals and celebrities alike (Nicholas Cage has been a number of times). Accolades are also forthcoming from local, national and international bodies who have deemed many awards on this restaurant, including Les Routiers Restaurant of the Year 2011.

4. THE MINT ROOM – Lower Bristol Road

Another Indian restaurant located in an old religious building, this time a Gospel Hall on the outskirts of the city; The Mint Room is worth a taxi ride, or walk, to experience it’s fusion of contemporary and modern styles and that’s not just in the decor but in the food too. Emphasis is placed on sourcing ingredients locally and the fresh and exciting dishes are bound to tantalise the tastebuds. Booking is advisable as this restaurant is incredibly popular.

Panahar doesn’t pull any punches – it is simply unpretentious, relaxed dining with popular and well cooked Indian dishes that you can enjoy either in their restaurant, or order as take out. It gets busy but staff are friendly and helpful. You can bring your own drinks here as the restaurant doesn’t have a license, and they currently don’t charge corkage for bringing your own, so you can relax with a tipple of your choice.
