Nunney Castle

Built in the 1370’s under Royal license, Nunney Castle has had a varied and sometimes turbulent history. Preserved today by English Heritage, the castle remains are a popular visitor attraction near the spa city of Bath. The Castle was built by Sir John de la Mare, a local knight who was at that time enjoying substantial Royal favour, after his involvement in the Hundred Years War. The design of the castle was much talked about at the time it was built and includes a 16 metres tall stone tower-keep and a moat surrounding the perimeter.

The ruins of the castle are now a respected monument, attracting many visitors each year who are eager to learn about the history of this romantic ruin. Nunney Castle has undergone many changes over the years including severe damage in battle during the civil war. The ruins are a marvellous sight and have been described as “aesthetically the most impressive castle in Somerset.”
