Just when you think you’ve seen all the historic attractions that make short breaks in Bath so special there’s another one to discover. Ladies and gentlemen we give you the beautiful Farleigh Hungerford Castle…
Just nine miles from the centre of the city the castle is a picturesque ruin with a colourful history. It sits in the Frome valley right on the Somerset and Wiltshire border, and it dates right back to the 14th century. A free audio tour brings the ruins to life as visitors wander the site in their own time, and the National Trust attraction is a fascinating one.
Learn about the Hungerford family who called this striking castle home for three hundred years, examine the fading wall paintings in the chapel and venture down into the crypt. The Priest’s house features an extensive collection of displays that tell the tales of the site’s past (some of them gorier than others!) and it’s all right in the setting of a peaceful valley.
Stand still and imagine the days when the ruin was a dramatic fortified mansion, and once you start hearing about the events that took place in this tranquil spot it’ll seem entirely different. Enjoy!
