April sees the return of the fabulous Festival, Bath in Fashion. On for a week (18th -24th April 2016), the festival packs a big fashion punch in the shopping scene in the city.
This year’s festival sees familiar international names all converging on the Georgian streets – from Harper’s Bazaar, M&S, Vogue, Tim Walker, Barbara Hulanicki, Seasalt, Julien Macdonald, Zandra Rhodes and Liberty.
There are catwalk shows, talks, workshops, a Michelin starred lunch, a Vintage Fashion Fair, Student nights, plus much much more.
Always hotly anticipated is the BIF Live, taking place on Thursday 21st April, whereby selected stores throughout the city offer discounts, style advice, make-up masterclasses, whilst unveiling the latest season trends. There will also be a pop up shop by Zandra Rhodes where you can meet the designer in person!
The Royal School of Needlework will be back to help you make your own headpiece, Bath’s own “yarn-bomber” artist Emma Leith will be on hand to share her crocheting skills, and Bath Spa University are setting up a panel of industry professionals to advise anyone who is thinking of a career in the world of fashion.
Bath is of course home to the wonderful Fashion Museum, which curates clothing from the past 300 years through its collection and is the permanent space for the Dress of the Year exhibition. A number of talks will be occurring here over the week, plus Nicholas Oakwell’s couture gown, commissioned by No 10’s Britain is Great campaign and designed for supermodel Erin O’Connor will be on display in the above Assembly Rooms.
Still not had enough of fashion? Spend an evening or two at The Little Theatre Cinema where films on the theme of “fashion” will be shown, including the memorable Breakfast at Tiffany’s with the delectable Audrey Hepburn.
If the fashion events haven’t exhausted you, then the fantastic shopping in the city certainly will. Not only is there the shopping area of Southgate to explore, but head into the main part of town to seek out current trends and independent stores. If you’re not sure where to start here are a few of our favourite locations and shops to try:
- Milsom Place – This labyrinthine area of shops and restaurants has some truly hidden treasures within. There’s the familiar names of Hobbs and Cath Kidston mixed in with the ever stylish ChaniiB shoes and luxury leatherwear of EZZA.
- Kingsmead Square – Grace & Ted – Blink and your miss it, which would be a huge mistake, this second hand designer boutique on the corner of a Georgian row, is run by a mum and daughter team (ably assisted by pooch Charlie) who really know their Ashish from their Westwood. Two floors of delectable delights to be enjoyed. Discounts too during Bath in Fashion.
- Milsom Street – Jolly’s – Part of the House of Fraser department stores, Jolly’s has been on the shopping map for Bathonians and visitors alike since 1823. Inside you’ll find concessions from Chanel, 7 for all Mankind, Linea, Hugo Boss and many more. Home-wear available also.
- Bartlett Street – in this artisan quarter heading towards The Assembly Rooms you’ll find delightful boutiques such as Sisi & May, The Loft and Toast. It’s also home to the Bartlett Street Antique Centre where you can pick up an accessory or two if you so wish.
Why not rest your Louboutin’s (or Blahnik’s if you’re truly dedicated to Bath fashion since the designer lives in the city) after a long day with a glass of champagne in our 1846 Bar, and something to nibble in our Parisian style Brasserie Brunel. Offering a choice of delicious home-made dishes, you can relax in style whilst discussing the festival events you’ve been to and the treats you’ve bought!
