Roman Baths

One of the most influential areas of Bath is the Roman Baths. They are the reason why the city has its name and also one of the reasons why it also happens to be one of the UK’s most famous cities.

The Baths have been a part of the city since approximately 70 AD and made use of the naturally hot spring water that gave the Romans the perfect opportunity to bath and socialise with others. Because the baths are in such a good condition they are thought to be one of the best preserved Roman structures in the UK and the rest of the world.

Hot Spring Water

Incredibly over one million litres of spring water still reaches the baths every single day, and it has been estimated to reach an impressive 46 °C. It’s no wonder the Romans loved the baths and the water that happily flowed in daily.

The spring waters are surrounded by ancient pathways that still remain intact. If you visit the Great Bath you will also have the chance to view the beautiful statues that are in surprisingly good condition considering their age.

There are other parts of the baths that you can explore such as the changing rooms, the ancient heated rooms where Romans literally sweated it out and the tepid and plunge pools. Learn how these rooms and pools played an integral part in Roman life and helped to keep the baths alive.

Don’t forget to visit the interactive museum which will help to transport you back 200 years and get a glimpse into the life of the locals.

Your Guide

If you would like to enjoy a guided tour of the baths, think about using the audio guide that’s available. The commentary that’s available in eight different languages is not to be missed and you’ll find the whole experience both entertaining and informative.

Twilight Dinner and Tour

If you would like to make your trip to the baths just that little more special then you may want to take a special tour. You can now enjoy visiting the Roman Baths when it’s lit by torchlight so you get the chance to see it in all its glory.
