Thomas Baldwin was one of the leading architects of Bath from 1775 until his death in 1820. Baldwin was believed to be responsible for many of the stunning Georgian buildings that are still seen in the spa city today. Palladian style was what Thomas Baldwin preferred and his own home at Great Pulteney Street was one of his own designs.
Arriving in Bath in 1774 the young Thomas Baldwin was not always and architect, although he did rise to the rank of Bath City Architect and also Bath City Surveyor, 2 posts that were coveted by others in the profession. So coveted that rival architect John Palmer began an investigation into Thomas Baldwin and his work in 1792; which ultimately had Baldwin dismissed from his position and eventually declared bankrupt due to a culmination of problems and financial irregularities.
Thomas Baldwin remained a respected resident of Bath and was buried in St. Michael’s cemetery after his death in 1820, aged 70 years old.
