Things to Do in Bath for Free

There are so many things to do in Bath that it can be hard to know where to begin. From remnants of the Roman Empire to potent symbols of the British Empire the city is teeming with sites of historic and cultural significance. But what if you’re on a budget? Are there still things you can do that won’t cost anything? Happily, the answer is “Yes” and we’re going to take a look at some of them now.

Things to do in Bath for Free

See the Royal Crescent – The Royal Crescent was constructed in 1774 during the height of the Georgian period. It is a textbook example of the Georgian emphasis on symmetry and proportion. Bring a picnic lunch and blanket and enjoy an afternoon on the lawn.

Visit Bath Abbey – The Abbey began life more than 1,400 years ago as a Benedictine monastery. After Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries the Abbey fell into disrepair, only to be saved by Henry’s daughter Elizabeth I. Today it is a wonderful example of what is called “Perpendicular Gothic” architecture and very much worth a visit.

Take in the Artisan Market – On the first Saturday of every month, Queen Square hosts an Artisan Market. The market is a great way to spend an afternoon and features the work of local jewellers, artists, clothiers, weavers and much more.

Visit the Pulteney Bridge – The Pulteney Bridge was constructed around the same time as the Royal Crescent and is one of only 4 bridges in the entire world that is lined with shops on both sides for its entire length. You will be forgiven for thinking you’ve been transported to Florence where the strikingly similar Ponte Vecchio crosses the Arno.

Picnic in Alexandra Park – Sitting atop a hillside overlooking the city Alexandra Park has been a local institution for more than 100 years. The views from the park are breathtaking making it another great place to enjoy a leisurely picnic lunch.

Is it Free to Visit the Baths? – Unfortunately, the cost of maintaining the Roman baths means that they have to charge for admission. However, if you are a resident of the city you are allowed to enter free. The above is just a sampling of the many interesting and engaging things to do in Bath for free. When you visit, make sure you book a room at the Royal Hotel. From its prime location in the city centre, you’ll be perfectly situated to head out on your adventure.
