Hot in the City – Top 5 Places to Cool off in Bath

Summer is truly here and its been a scorching one. With the heatwave set to continue we thought we’d come up with a few ways to keep yourself cool whilst still enjoying your visit to Bath.

  1. Messing about on the River

Bath is lucky enough to enjoy Canals and a River wending their ways through the city – so why not hire a boat and take a trip out on the water. Better still, get someone else to steer the boat for you and take one of the River Cruises that run from Pulteney Bridge every hour (1 April to 31 October annually) and see the sights from a different perspective.

2. We all scream for ice cream!

When the weather is hot, there’s nothing better than keeping cool with a soft drink and an ice cream. Around the city you’ll find plenty of places to pick up a cone, from street carts to ice cream vans. One of our favourite places to stop off and grab something cooling is the Real Italian Ice Cream Company on York Street. They’ve got everything from Italian gelato to American slushies. Bellissimo!

3. Gone with the Gin

This one is for adults only! After a warm day walking around Bath, why not relax and sink back into one of the many divine cocktail bars that the city has to offer. Our favourites include The Dark Horse Bar, The Confessional, Canary Gin Bar and Circo. Plus, you can grab yourself a G&T or an Amaretto Fizz in The Royal Hotel’s 1846 Bar. Cheers!

4. Park Life

Whether you want somewhere to sunbathe or simply read in the shade, Bath has a plethora of parks and gardens for visitors and locals alike to enjoy. For a view of the river and a free deckchair, get to the Parade Gardens early – for just a few pence you can enjoy this central Garden and perhaps even listen to a band. Whilst a spot in Royal Victoria Park may give you the most stunning backdrop for a picnic ever – the Royal Crescent.

5. Head in the Clouds

On a beautiful day why not take to the skies with a Balloon ride over the city. Bailey’s Balloons fly from the heart of the city – Royal Victoria Park – enabling you to get the finest views of Bath. Drinks are included as part of their package, including the option of champagne for those who want to celebrate a special day, or simply “just because”. Perfect on early mornings or late summer evenings when the skies are blue and air is crisp.

Remember if you’re out and about in the sunshine do try and ensure you’ve a hat and a cover up with you, plus slap on that sun-cream and stay hydrated throughout the day. Try and keep out of the sunshine when its strongest, between 11am and 3pm.

If you’re feeling a bit hot and bothered and need to cool down, then head to The Royal Hotel. We’re only opposite the main railway station and not only have a fully stocked bar offering soft drinks, teas, coffees, cocktails and other alcoholic drinks. We’ve also light bites and snacks available in the Bar and Lounge, and full meals in our fully air-conditioned Brasserie Brunel.
